AI and ML in Cybersecurity today and tomorrow (Panel Discussion)


Gorka Sadowski, Chief Strategy Officer at Exabeam. In his role, he assists the executive team and functional leaders across the company with developing, communicating, executing and sustaining corporate strategic initiatives. Gorka has spent the last 30 years in security with experience spanning leadership roles across product management, sales, marketing and operations. Most recently, Gorka was senior director and security and risk management analyst at Gartner driving coverage for SIEM, SOC, and managed detection and response (MDR), while also leading research for IT leaders on emerging topics. Prior to Gartner, Gorka led business development at Splunk where he established and built the Splunk security ecosystem. Prior to Splunk, he established presence for LogLogic in Southern Europe, ran security activities for Unisys in France and launched the first partner-led intrusion detection and prevention system (IDPS) in the industry as lead for NetScreen’s Emerging Technology efforts. A certified CISSP, Gorka received a computer science degree from Universite de Pau in France before moving to the U.S. as a Ph.D. candidate in network security at the University of Miami.

Xiang Fu, PhD, professor of computer science at the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, has been named the 2020 Mentor of the Year, an annual award that honors outstanding faculty supervision of advanced undergraduate research.

Dr. Fu’s research interests include Software Engineering, Formal Verification, Model Checking, Information Security, Web Services, Web Security, and Malware Analysis. He is a firm believer of hands-on project oriented teaching methodology, and that faculty should not only help students build up the knowledge base of the subject, but also set up the challenging environment for them to practice their skills, team working spirits, and the ability to solve problems independently.

Brent Rose has 40 years’ experience in Cybersecurity supporting the Defense Industry.  Currently the Lead Security Control Assessor and Pen-Testing engineer for a US Government office.   With a team of 30 engineers, they validate the proper configuration of more than 1500 IT Assets as directed by NIST 800-53 and ICD503. His former national policy efforts include:  Creation of the electronic personal security questionnaire demonstration system for the federal government.  Established a two-tiered cybersecurity assessment process. Industrial Co-Chair of the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM) and Supplemental (NISPOM-SUP) authorship team for Cybersecurity.  Member of authorship team for DCID 6/3 standard for IT Security and it’s follow-on ICD-503.  Brent lives in NY with his wife, an Old English Sheepdog and five (sometimes six) cats. His hobbies are
playing guitar, stained glass, building tube amplifiers and restoring his daughters 73-year-old house.

Understanding Today’s Networking Security Challenges

Discussion centers around today’s security situation and ways for organizations to acknowledge their status and move to a more mature security posture. The presenter goes over where we’ve been, what the industry looks like today, discusses gaps and concludes with recommendations for a better future. This conversation goes over technical components as well as business challenges. Real world use cases are covered as well tilting this presentation into a real world showcase of what’s happening real time in industry.

Eric Jeffery has over 30 years’ information technology experience with nearly 25 years in cyber security. Mr. Jeffery currently works as a Regions Solutions Engineer at AlgoSec. He has published dozens of articles, presented at numerous conferences, and has a patent filed for a novel cyber security defensive maturity model. Eric runs a Podcast under the moniker Cyber Security Grey Beard® to help students and early professionals learn, grow, and advance in the information security profession. Eric lives outside of Denver, CO with his wife and has four grown children.
