Brandywine Black produces deep maroon tomatoes that can reach 16 Oz in weight. This variety is an heirloom tomato from the 1800s with great flavor and matures in about 100 days. When the tomatoes are very large, they can display cracking, and they may need staking since they are indeterminate. William Woys Weaver, a seed expert and author, received the seed for Brandywine Black from his Quaker grandfather. His grandfather received the seed from Dr. Harold E. Martin, a medical man and plant enthusiast from Westtown, Pennsylvania with several heirloom varieties to his credit. Dr. Martin began producing this variety in the 1920s, reportedly selecting it from a cross between a red Brandywine and a brown Beefsteak tomato.
